Position Rules Change for 2001: When a player STARTS at a position he's not currently listed at 15 games, he'll have the position added for the start of the next week. Example: Ray Durham starts at CF 15 times by the end of week 3. He'll have CF added for the start of week 4. Please note on week 7, or 15 change, if applicable, he'd lose 2B if he's no longer playing it.

Position are made every year in the middle of January based on where players are going to play in 2001.  Here are our thoughts on issues and players.
1) Our first priority is always the position they are going to play in the coming year. We do look at last year, but that's not the sole basis of our decisions, just another factor.
2) After 15 years of doing this, you develop a "feel" based on the proven reputations of players, teams, and proven histories of certain situations from the past.  For example, Tatis was traded to the Expos and EVERY report has Barrett listed as C. Just like when we moved Zeile to 1B last year at this time. If the situation is not very clear, we'll error on the side of letting the change Week 7 work things out, or the new rule above.
3) Everyone always asks....  There is NO one source I look at to determine positions. I use EVERY source I can get my hands on and make my decisions.
4) As per the rules, ANY player can be moved strictly to DH, starting Week 7. Albert Belle,  Frank Thomas, Ellis Burks, Wil Cordero, Russ Branyan, Juan Gonzalez, and Greg Vaughn are among those that are in this group. You've been warned!!
5) White Sox CF situation.... I've seen Durham listed there, I've seen Valentin listed there (and 3B). In cases like this, when a player might move to a position he's never played before and there's still much doubt, we'll let Week 7, or new rule change take care of it.
6) The Week 15 change implented last year for the first time has greatly reduced the number of changes here in January as compared to prior years.
7) When in doubt, use common sense.
